When life slows down, stories emerge.

For most of my life, I lived in the city, first Dallas and then Atlanta, working with large companies where time was measured in meetings, deadlines, and flights to catch. It was interesting work, but it moved fast.

Then my wife and I made a decision that changed everything. We left the city and moved to her family’s two-hundred-year-old home in rural Alabama to begin what became a ten-year journey to restore it.

At first, I thought we were simply changing addresses. Looking back, I think we were changing our mindset.

Everything slowed down.

I found myself noticing things I had once hurried past. The molding on an old house. A story passed down through her family. The stillness of the countryside.

Instead of sleepwalking through each day, I learned to stay awake. To listen. To watch.

Then one day, a bluetick beagle walked out of the trees. He was dusty, wild-eyed, and wandering. He did not ask me for anything. He simply turned, and I followed.

Looking back, I think I was following more than a dog. I was following a voice inside me, one that had always wanted to see the world differently.

Somewhere along the way, I started to write.

My first book, A House in the Country, tells the story of restoring that old family home and the lessons we learned along the way. Since then, I have continued writing nonfiction and fiction, inspired by history, place, family, and the stories hidden inside my ordinary life.

The stories were always in me. I simply had to slow down long enough to see them.
