Built in 1819 - The Inspiration behind A House in the Country
The Molett House, built in 1819, has been under restoration for the past fifteen years and counting. We remain committed to its careful preservation and long-term stewardship.
This enduring work is led by homeowners David and Eleanor Cheatham, whose shared love of historic homes continues to guide the restoration. Eleanor, a native of Selma, Alabama, brings a deep appreciation for the region’s history, and together they have spent years researching the house and surrounding area to better understand its full story.
Their efforts are grounded not only in preservation, but in acknowledgment, including a commitment to honoring the lives of those who were wrongly enslaved and connected to the property’s history.
This journey has also inspired David Cheatham’s debut novel, A House in the Country, a story shaped by themes of history, place, and the passage of time.
